TOLERANCE


Then when He (Jesus) walked through there, He (Jesus) saw Levi, son of Alphaeus sitting at the customs house and then He (Jesus) said to him, "Follow me!" So stand Levi and follow Him (Jesus).


Levi (or Matthew) was a tax collector / taxes from the Jews to the Romans. Levi (Matthew) was a scholar, businessman, which is useful for the Romans, who then ruled the Jewish nation. Although Levi (Matthew) rich, but he was despised by his own people, the Jews. Levi (Matthew) certainly was surprised when Jesus said to him, and more surprised again when Jesus asked him to follow Jesus. But Levi quickly approve the request / invitation of Jesus to him. Levi (Matthew) is very proud to be a disciple of Jesus, so he invited friends and Pharisees (the scribes).

The reason why Jesus invited Levi (Matthew) shows the love of Jesus is so great that He would take each person (including a sinner) to return to the right path. Jesus would eat with the people 'lost' (tax collectors) to show sincerity and tolerance. For the scribes, Jesus was a very understanding religious law / Torah, is a part of them, so they feel 'uncomfortable' when Jesus would eat with Matthew and his friends (The sinner.

Former prisoners at once asked why now he wants to be a good person and not rich but if they see his talent in the theft and dismantling safe (storage cupboard money), he'll have a lot of money, if it remains in its field. The prisoner said, "Jesus calls were echoed in the hearts and mind, so I had to follow His path, that brought peace in my heart and thank me in the heart of my wife and the third of my son." I had to decide my choice and I chose to follow Jesus, because Jesus called me to work for him and to make my family use to others.

TOLERANSI


Kemudian ketika Ia (Yesus) berjalan lewat di situ, Ia (Yesus) melihat Lewi, anak Alfeus duduk di rumah cukai lalu Ia (Yesus) berkata kepadanya, "Ikutlah Aku!" Maka berdirilah Lewi dan mengikuti Dia (Yesus).


Lewi (atau Matius) adalah seorang pemungut cukai/ pajak dari orang Yahudi untuk bangsa Romawi. Lewi (Matius) adalah orang terpelajar, pengusaha, yang berguna untuk bangsa Romawi, yang saat itu menjajah bangsa Yahudi. Walaupun Lewi (Matius) kaya, namun dia dipandang hina oleh bangsanya sendiri, Yahudi. Lewi (Matius) tentu terkejut saat Yesus berkata padanya, dan lebih kaget lagi saat Yesus meminta dia untuk mengikuti Yesus. Namun Lewi secara cepat menyetujui permintaan/ ajakan Yesus kepadanya. Lewi (Matius) sangat bangga menjadi murid Yesus, sehingga ia mengundang teman-teman dan orang Farisi (para ahli Taurat).

Alasan mengapa Yesus mengajak Lewi (Matius) menunjukkan Kasih Yesus yang sangat besar sehingga Dia mau mengajak setiap orang (termasuk orang berdosa) untuk kembali ke jalan yang benar. Yesus mau makan bersama-sama dengan orang-orang 'sesat' (pemungut cukai) menunjukkan ketulusan dan toleransinya. Bagi ahli Taurat, Yesus adalah orang yang sangat memahami hukum agama/ Taurat, merupakan bagian dari mereka, sehingga mereka merasa 'tidak nyaman' ketika Yesus mau makan bersama-sama Matius dan teman-temannya (Orang berdosa).

Mantan narapidana pernah di tanya mengapa sekarang dia mau menjadi orang baik dan tidak kaya padahal jika melihat bakatnya dalam mencuri dan membongkar brankas (lemari penyimpan uang), dia akan mempunyai banyak uang, jika tetap dalam bidangnya. Sang Narapidana berkata, "Panggilan Yesus terasa menggema di hati dan pikiranku, sehingga aku harus mengikuti jalan-Nya yang membawa kedamaian di hatiku dan membuatku di terima di hati isteri dan ketiga anakku." Aku harus menentukan pilihanku dan aku memilih mengikuti Yesus, karena Yesus memanggilku untuk berkarya bagi-Nya dan untuk membuat keluargaku berguna bagi sesamanya.
