TRUST WITHOUT FEAR

Maybe you've read or heard of this article from several national and international media, i.e.:

A mother in the United States, SM, aged 44, suffering from a rare disease / genetic disorder called Urbach-Wiethe (loss of part of the brain called the amygdala, the part that has a structure similar to almonds, is the central setting of fear).

SM is a mother who already has 3 children, did not have any fear of threats. Snakes, scorpions and even death threats did not make her shudder in fear. SM's Children admitted, their mother was strange because the usual rounding up snakes in the yard.

Reportedly SM ignored death threats when one day she was confronted by robber, until finally the robber who actually lose his nerve. "At that time I was 30 years, there are drunken man pointing a knife at me. I said if you want to kill me, skip the angels of God who take care of me. Then he was frightened," said SM is in her daily life is very religious and devout worship.

Dr Justin Feinstein, researchers from the University of Iowa said the condition of SM have been observed in the last 20 years. The results showed this woman can not even recognize fear in facial expressions of others.

In a research report published in the journal Current Biology, edition of December 16, 2010, Dr. Feinstein said the condition could inspire SM therapy for patients with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Mungkin anda pernah membaca atau mendengar artikel dari beberapa media nasional maupun internasional, yaitu :

Seorang ibu di Amerika Serikat, SM, berusia 44 tahun, mengidap penyakit langka/ kelainan genetik yang disebut Urbach-Wiethe (kehilangan bagian otak yang dinamakan amygdala, bagian yang memiliki struktur mirip buah almond, merupakan pusat pengaturan rasa takut).

Ibu SM yang telah memiliki 3 orang anak ini, tidak punya rasa takut terhadap ancaman apapun. Ular, kalajengking dan bahkan ancaman pembunuhan tidak membuatnya bergidik ketakutan. Anak-anak SM mengakui, ibunya memang aneh karena biasa menangkapi ular di pekarangan.

Kabarnya SM tidak menggubris ancaman pembunuhan ketika suatu saat ia berhadapan dengan perampok, hingga akhirnya si perampok yang justru kehilangan nyali. "Waktu itu umurku 30 tahun, ada pria mabuk menodongkan pisau kepadaku. Aku bilang kalau kamu mau membunuhku, lewati dulu malaikat-malaikat Tuhan yang menjagaku. Lalu pria itu malah ketakutan," ujar SM yang dalam kesehariannya memang sangat religius dan taat beribadah.

Dr Justin Feinstein, peneliti dari University of Iowa mengatakan kondisi SM telah diamati dalam 20 tahun terakhir. Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan perempuan ini bahkan tidak bisa mengenali ekspresi takut pada wajah orang lain.

Dalam laporan penelitian yang dipublikasikan dalam jurnal Current Biology edisi 16 Desember 2010, Dr Feinstein mengatakan kondisi SM bisa mengilhami terapi untuk penderita gangguan stres pasca-trauma atau Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
